Geography genius

About a year ago, when we got together with our friends from our time in Kentucky, I was amazed by Kayla and Daniel's 2-year-old geography buff. Again, Bright was only two years old and he amazed me as he sat at the table and delighted in answering his daddy's questions about countries like Lithuania, Tanzania, Madagascar, and Siberia. He smiled an adorable little squinty grin as he spouted off geography trivia and astounded me with his multisyllabic brilliance.

Daniel's recent post reminded me of our little geography-loving friend (and the picture of him on a pink bike is awesome), but it also reminded me that what we expose our children to is so formative and so powerful. Daniel and Kayla's map is an outward sign of the things that are on their heart. God has called them to move halfway around the world for the sake of the Good News of Jesus Christ. They have a visible reminder for themselves and a teaching tool for their children about what God has called them to as a family. So I shouldn't have been surprised about when little Bright knew the capital of South Africa. They have world map conversation around the breakfast table.

But it was something to think about for me. Much more than what I'm not exposing my children to, what is it that I am exposing my children to and how is that forming their perspective, their priorities, and their worldview? And also- what am I exposing myself to, day in and day out, that is forming and molding my perspective, my priorities, and my worldview? Made me think...

So true my friend, it almost motivated me to move my map to the wall in the dining room. I want my family to have a "world"view. You know?
