Four years old and forever to go

You've got a friend in me

When the road looks rough ahead

And you're miles and miles from your nice warm bed

Just remember what your old pal said

You've got a friend in me

Yeah, you've got a friend in me!
Happy birthday Sam and Zeke!  We love you both!!!!

Birthday blessing - Bob Dylan style

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung

May you stay... forever young

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong

May you stay... forever young

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
And may your song always be sung

May you stay... forever young

May you stay... forever young

Jude 1:21 "Keep [yourself] in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life."

I love you, you crazy Cajun Tex. Happy birthday. Here's to many more...

Sleepless love

This is the sweet and beautiful reason I'm very tired and slightly incoherent these days. We're going on three to six non-consecutive hours of sleep per night for six nights now.  It is my great privelege and I will do this gig forever if I have to because this child is so worth it, but still... I'm incoherent nonetheless.

I have so many thoughts about

this... and this... and this... and this...

and maybe soon I'll get back on a regular schedule and I'll be able to put together thoughts again, but until then, I'm on the night shift.

"...his banner over me is love." Song of Songs 2:4

I'm realizing that the overall purpose of my life is love and the Lord teaches us in all kinds of ways how to love well.

Right now, I think he's teaching me how to love even when you're tired.

I hope I'll be a quick learner.  Lord, help me.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10  But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.  That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

What do you see?

My mom emailed me this picture of me on the right from 1980ish and said, "I see Zeke."

At the very least, we both like green, I guess.

When less is more

A sweet but sick baby kept me sleep deprived for much of our Alabama visit to see Kate and Patrick, but I guess that all things can be redeemed because less really turned out to be more. I may have been delirious and showerless all Sunday, but it was good.

We porch swang.

We laughed.

We scooted in the sunshine.

We chased the ice cream truck down and ran with our hands in the air like crazy people (okay, that was mostly me and the kids, but still... it was fun).

We danced to folk and zydeco and jam bands and bluegrass and old school country tunes.

Earlier in the weekend, we got out and science museumed and got our Kosmic Karma on at Mellow Mushroom, but mostly, the visit was a nice, slow sample of Spring that tasted like King Cake, looked like family, sounded like laughter, and felt like sunshine.

Yep.

Less was definitely more.

Thanks, Montgomerys! And thank you, Lord, for such a beautiful taste of spring. It was fun times for sure.

Happiness is a Matchbox car

He's four years old today.

What a big little guy.

Sometimes that little grin of his makes my heart skip a beat. That and his sweet little prayers. And the way he says "schweet."

He is precious.

To Zeke, happiness is a matchbox car. It just doesn't take much to thrill his heart. Last night, he came in our room and (following his sister's lead) asked us when he could have a TV in his room. We told him when he turned 27, but you would have thought we said tomorrow. He was elated.

He is daddy's little sidekick, momma's sweetheart, Anna Grace's buddy, and Asher's hero.

Today as I was "bamming cars" with my little Z man, he told me that he was "brave of fires and storms because God reaches out his hand and I hold it."

It was Isaiah 41:13 in four-year old.

"For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you."

He can be really silly and wild and he may be terrible at eating veggies, but he's growing strong and knows from Whom his strength comes.

So may you always rest in that strength, my son, and may you know the help of the Lord in all of life's storms.

I love you forever.

Happy Birthday, Z man!

Fragrance

Lie: Pursuing the Lord in prayer and Bible study is boring. You will miss out on other things.

Truth: Pursing the Lord in prayer and Bible study is a fascinating journey with your Creator. There is nothing better in life.

He is fascinating in so many ways.

Friday afternoon, I was Skyping with Kathy and discussing the fragrance of the Lord and specifically Song of Songs 1:12-17. The commentary we were discussing spoke regarding the diversity and abundance of the beauty He possesses. It pointed us to 2 Corinthians 2:14-16:

Thanks be to God who…through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things?
It pointed us to Luke 7 and the prostitute who annointed Jesus with expensive perfume.

It asked a question: What kind of fragrance is coming forth from your spirit before God? Does God smell the fragrance of confidence and gratitude?

And then, later that day, my husband comes home and what did he give me for Valentines Day?

New perfume.

Of course.

I can only imagine the Lord's grin.

Now, every time I squirt my new scent, I'll be thinking about the One who, through us, diffuses the fragrance of his knowledge in every place and that as I remain in Him, I am the fragrance of Christ to God.

Whoa.

This journey is just anything but boring.

Freeze frame Friday

Asher alternates between army crawling and sitting up after his half-cut lima beans and quarter-cut grapes snack.

We celebrate Valentine's Day tonight in conjunction with our church's Parents Night Out, so Jack's valentine gift assortments await his arrival- each with a corresponding song. This was a creative year.

Anna Grace draws and Zeke eats during computer time. Very typical.

My table happily displays its new placemats I found for $1.99. It's been years since I've bought placemats.

And there sit the Diet Cokes- by the back door waiting for a new home. We're going to be a Diet Coke- free zone!
This finally convinced Jack us.

And there you go. Freeze frame for the moment this Friday afternoon as we wait for the pater familias to make his weekend entrance.

TGIF, right?!

A miracle

Yesterday, as our truck ascended the interstate on ramp, Zeke caught a glimpse of the afternoon sun breaking through some clouds- kind of like this picture. With big eyes and a smile, he pointed and exclaimed, "Look, mommy! It's a MIRACLE!"

I'm not really sure what he thinks in that little almost-four-year-old brain of his. We've read a lot of Bible stories about a lot of miracles, but never anything about light breaking through clouds.

Or have we?

I thought about it.

"Let there be light" Genesis 1:3

"The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it." John 1:5

Maybe Zeke is right.

Maybe we're surrounded by a million different miracles every single day and we just don't have the eyes to see it.

Matthew 18:2-4 "He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: 'I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.'"

The things we learn from our children...

High five, baby

Welcome to Louisiana. Where a smattering of snow gets us out of school and onto the closest big hill (in our case, at our local highschool), armed with the top of a large plastic storage container top for some good old fashioned sledding (after we scrape our windshield with a spatula, of course).

A plastic storage container top... or a laundry basket...or a plastic baby pool...

Or heck... a sign for the Blue Collar Diner works, too.

But to be fair, Blue Collar Diner Dude slid the fastest and longest of us all.

And then he looked at his girlfriend, smiled, and said "High five for a good snow day."

Indeed, Blue Collar Diner Dude. A good snow day indeed.

Who enjoyed what

We woke up yesterday to a ground-covering snow.  Very exciting for our neck of the woods (and again, Lyd, sorry... I know you're over it).
Our poor Zeke had the flu, however, and could only enjoy yesterday's snow from behind a window.  But he did enjoy Toy Story 2 and staying in his pj's all day.  And he seemed to be okay with staying out of the cold.

Anna Grace enjoyed hours of fun in the winter wonderland.  More to come on that.

As for Asher, he enjoyed his very first donut.  Lucky for us, Jack's Friday morning attempt to brave I-20 to get to work in Texas only took him as far as Hearne Ave.  We enjoyed the treats- the donuts AND having him around all day.

I enjoyed it all.

Lift up their eyes

Psalm 121:1-8 I lift up my eyes to the hills-- where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip-- he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD watches over you-- the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm-- he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

I was looking at this picture of Asher and it reminded me of lifting up my eyes and what was that psalm about lifting up your eyes? [searching Bible Works software] Oh yeah... Psalm 121. And then I read it and then I thought of our proverbial brothers and sisters in Egypt who must have to trust and pray and press into the heart of God in a way that I've never known.

Lord, watch over their coming and goings indeed. And bring your peace to Egypt...

Two out of three

Two out of three because number two wasn't quite 100% today. Here's hoping we can catch one or two  smiles from the Z man sometime in the next 24 hours.
