for Zoe

As I sit here tonight, I still have a lump in my throat and that all too familiar deep spirit-pain in my chest as I grieve.  Turns out, we only had 20 short months with Zoe Jefferson Polka Dot Cowgirl Emmaline Chaney, miniature schnauzer extraordinaire.  Sunday after supper, I called her from across the street at exactly the wrong moment.  She was hit by a car and killed instantly.  Needless to say, we are heartbroken.  And I still don't know what to say.

But even so, we give thanks for the 20 months that we did have with our precious little black and white fur ball.

We give thanks (#708) for how she loved the kids and let them wrestle and wrangle her all they wanted.

We give thanks (#709) for the joy she brought to our children.

We give thanks (#710) for all the wonderful memories we have with her in tow.

We give thanks (#711) for the Lord being near to the brokenhearted (we are) and how He saves those crushed in spirit.  (Psalm 34:18)

After Jack dug her grave in our backyard, we were able to pray and say that the Lord gives and the Lord takes away and blessed be the name of the Lord and we give thanks (#712) for his love that endures forever and that even death cannot separate us from that love.

We give thanks (#712) for the many theological conversations we've had with the kids.  For Zeke's sure hope in the day of the Lord, for Anna Grace's longing for Jesus, and even for Asher's comforting words to mommy when she cried:  "God loves you, Momma.  God is with you, Momma."

We give thanks (#713) for Zoe whose very name means life and the way she reminded us of the brevity, fragility, and the preciousness of life.

Thank you, Lord, for Zoe.

"Death is wrong," Daniel says, whenever he officiates a funeral. "It feels wrong because it is."

Praise God that one day, all things will be made right!

Love, tears, and prayers from East Asia.
