an asteroid belt of youngness

With great sincerity, Anna Grace gave a solemn speech- a manifesto of childhood- on the way home from the picnic last night.

It went something like this:

"You have to treasure the first ten years of your life.  Up until then, it's an asteroid belt of youngness.  After you turn ten, you are out of the fingers [meaning you can't count your age on your hands] and you become a more mature child, so you have to look back on those great years and just think about how special you are because the world just wouldn't be the same without you."

Anna Grace, it's too true.  The world just wouldn't be the same without you.  Enjoy your asteroid belt of youngness, my sweet girl.  And even when you reach its outer edges, may you carry that childlike spirit with you always.

pizza quesadilla

Just call her Julia Child.

Anna Grace has been stirring and mixing and baking up all kinds of things lately.  So on Sunday night when I was planning on making some quesadillas, she asked if she could make pizza quesadillas which is just what you might guess- tortilla, pizza sauce, and cheese.  I've been making pizza a lot lately, so she pulled some leftover sauce out of the freezer, put it together, cooked it up and there you go- pizza quesadilla!  It was delicious and everyone was pleased.

And then she told me to "put it on Pinterest."

Play ball!

Our team bunches up and dog-piles on a ball in the outfield.

Bat to ball contact is inconsistent at best.

We need lots of coaching on when to run where.

But Jack is investing in Zeke who in turn is gaining confidence, experiencing his father's love, and having fun so yeah... it's pretty much totally worth it.

Don't forget

"The man who forgets to be thankful has fallen asleep in life."  Robert Louis Stevenson

It was four o'clock in the morning and my monster-rage had been unleashed.  The first two times a little one wakes up crying, I always roll out of bed and patiently get them water or covers or whatever they might need and crawl back in bed without thinking twice about it.  But when the complaining cries continue- when they wake up siblings and when they have me up for the day at a too-early hour- I go crazy and yell at crying children as if that helps.

I lose it.

And what I forget is that even in sleeplessness, I am blessed with grace upon grace and I don't deserve any of it.  I wake up and I refocus and read my devotional about falling asleep in life and I know that asleep in life is much worse than awake without sleep.  Again I am reminded that thanklessness propels me to selfishness and all kinds of sin, so I stop again and awake- really awake- to the reality of God's grace even in the midst of crying babies in the wee hours of the morning.

Thank you, God, for good nights of sleep cut short.  It only means I am blessed with crying children to love.

She could play Violet

We sent out some pretty interesting mail today.

Long story short, Anna Grace wanted to make sure that Jim Carrey knew that IF there was going to be a sequel to A Series Of Unfortunate Events (quite possibly her favorite movie which is based on a series of books that she is in the middle of reading), she would be very happy to play the part of Violet Baudelaire. After all, the movie was filmed eight years ago and the actress who played Violet would be much too old to play the part now.

Jack found a fan mail address. I can't wait to see if she gets a reply.
